Help This Boy!

If I listen to another track of Kanye West, a ballad by Guns n’ Roses, or the stringy voice of Sheryl Crow again, it might force me to commit a Michael Hutchence (I’m kinky like that).
Dear readers and lurkers, what is the music that all the cool kids listen to these days? Give me music recommendations! I’m eclectic in the sense that I enjoy a large swath of genres, but experimental bands like Modest Mouse make me weep for humanity.
And…go.
Finding Zen in an Empty Inbox Where have you been all my life?

i’ve been listening to a lot of vienna teng lately although not sure if i should have admitted that…
Vienna’s good, but I’m looking more for someone a little less dramatic. Something that goes good in the background while I’m working.
How about Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, or someone similar who can actually sing. One of the best and my all time favorites is Zoe!
I already have a big selection of Frank Sinatra, but my Carpenter’s discography takes up all the other space so poor Johnny and Perry can’t fit.
A child after my own heart. Would you like some Andrea Bocelli CDs? —the pop ones, not the opera ones?
Heh, ok, new rule: I’m interested in finding new music that appeals to the under-30 crowd.
(The Carpenter’s line above was a joke)
Have you heard of Gianmaria Testa? I don’t know how cool he is, but he makes good, jazz-infused music that goes very nicely in the background! I listen to him a lot while I am translating.
No I haven’t, I’ll check him out. Thanks!
What? GNR are good! Under 30 crowds huh? I’m under 30 and I want to commit a Michael Hutchene myself with the kind of music my generation listens to. Britney Spears?
Joking.
Anyway, you can try The Darkness, Franz Ferdinand or erm…well, Justin Timberlake? At least he sounds more funky lately. Madonna. Even cool kids nowadays will listen to her. :p
Of course, if else fail there is always Britney and Paris. ;)
I think my original post was a little too open ended. I like all of the bands that I listed, but I’ve listened to every song on my iPod several times over to the point that I now turn it off because there’s nothing I want to listen to. I love bands like GNR, but I need something new.
I just need an injection of new music to mix up the collection. I don’t listen to the radio, so I usually rely on friends’ suggestions. With no broadband currently, internet radio doesn’t help either.
How about – Paolo Nutini; Scissor Sisters; Tegan and Sara; go old skool with Blind Melon; my husband’s band is good – I know, shameless plug seeing you don’t know me but go check them out and see for yourself..

Ah, someone already mentioned myspace. I was about to add this as an afterthought. That’s a good place for cool music, a lot of good undiscovered bands. Try it! If I need just one reason to keep my myspace profile up, it’s for the music I find there.
@Kiki: Thanks for the link, I’ll check them out.
@Gloria: Trekking through MySpace requires more courage than I can usually muster up. Filtering through the hot pink on neon orange layouts with 6 videos playing simultaneously takes more time that it’s worth for me. http://www.pandora.com is a much better place to find good music. It takes your playlist and matches you up with good bands. Unfortunately, it only works in the US.
I forgot to mention The Kooks!! I love em.
kiki, good call! I have a few Kooks songs on my iPod.
I ended up digging through my stacks of CDs and found a two disc set called “The Anthems” that I had procured while I was in the US and completely forgotten about. It’s actually really good. My girlfriend also brought a whole pile of music last night, so I think my thirst for new music has been quelled … for now.
How about Fergie? Catchy, fun fluff. Also, Shakira is incredible, and upbeat to boot. I dig the new Rhianna single, “Umbrella”, and some of her other stuff is great, too.
If you want something more mellow/jazzy, try Madeline Peyroux, she’s fabulous. So is that new British singer, Corinne Bailey Rae. KT Tunstall is funky/jazzy/poppy, and lots of fun.
I’ve only heard of two artists in that list, so I’ll check out the others. Thanks for the tips!
What about james morrison, avril lavigne, red hot chili peppers, james blunt, arctic monkeys, joss stone, lily allen? Mika can be fun but annoying if you put him on a loop. What about some Richard Ashcroft, Snow Patrol and my fave at the moment, kd lang’s Hymns of the 49th Parallel (not new, but doesn’t go out of style). Love all the other suggestions though!
Now that you have broadband, try Groove Salad, an internet station you can get through Shoutcast/Winamp (free, I tellya, free!). Downbeat funky techno kinda stuff: eeeexcellent background music.
Hey Antares, yeah I’m a shoutcast junky (started back in Austin) and I listen to that station every now and then. Techno gets a little bland for me after a while, so I try to switch it up.
The one I really like now is The Hitz Channel because they play a large selection of hits from the last 15 years or so and the different genres keep me groovin’.
