Beauty is in the Eye of the Tortilla

- 9 July 2007, 21:37

I was digging around on my camera and found a photo of a culinary delight that I created with Simona and had completely forgotten about. As disgusting as it looks in that photo, have no doubt that it was absolutely delicious. It’s a piadina, essentially a flour tortilla, covered with sugar and cinnamon on one half and Nutella and sugar on the other.

Cinnamon and sugar on a buttered tortilla is something that my Mom used to make when I was a kid and one of my favorite quick snacks that I still make to this day. Simona’s not a big fan of cinnamon, so we experimented by spreading nutella over the other half because, really, you can’t go wrong with Nutella.

After a few minutes in the oven to smelt it all together and get the piadina crispy, I carefully slid it onto a plate and Simona’s first reaction was one of both horror and intrigue. I thought to myself, “Wow, that couldn’t have come out any worse.” But as long as it was hot and theoretically edible, I ripped off a small piece of the Nutella covered side, closed my eyes, and took a bite.

It was good. No, it was really good. In fact it tasted just like homemade brownies and it only took us 2 minutes to make. I felt like I had just invented instant coffee or the TV dinner and this new invention would usher in a new era of instant desserts for the busy suburban housewife and her 2.5 kids in ways not seen since Juan Valdez crossed the Rio Grande. I see our crispy nutella baked tortilla future and it looks good.

I wonder if it would work in the microwave for a snack at work? Or is it already patented?

As you can see from the photo, to make such a refined dessert requires years of training to achieve the perfect black coloring and smoky aroma.

i dont think i’ve ever made a cake that looked like what you see in the cookbooks, but they are almost always yummy. as they say, it’s what’s inside that’s important!!!

    Joni, thanks!

The beauty of making ugly desserts is that you don’t have to worry about anyone else eating them!

After closely scrutinizing the picture it is my opinion that your horse needs more fiber.

I agree with Dad (comment no. 5). I work in a Zoo, trust me, that image looks waay too familiar.

I will take your word that it tasted great though – messy dishes usually do. Might give it a go sometime too – my Nutella intake is dangerously low at present…

I was thinking about calling my creation “Turd a la mode”, but found it had already been trademarked by Shoney’s. Foiled again!
